Eight service contrasts, and how the 65 Cloud Practitioner questions work
CLF-C02 has 65 questions in 90 minutes, 50 scored and 15 unscored, and you need 700 on a scale of 100 to 1,000. It is compensatory, with no penalty for guessing. Learn look-alike services as eight contrasts and read the last line of each question first.
The exam rarely asks what a service is called. It asks which one fits.
The format in one place
| Feature | CLF-C02 |
|---|---|
| Questions | 65 in 90 minutes |
| Scored and unscored | 50 scored, 15 unscored, and you cannot tell which |
| Pass mark | 700 on a scale of 100 to 1,000 |
| Question types | Multiple choice (one of four) and multiple response (two or more of five or more; the question says how many) |
| Penalty for guessing | None |
The exam is compensatory: you pass on your overall score and need not pass each domain. Unanswered questions count as wrong, so never leave one blank.
Read the last line first
Most questions describe a short business need and ask for the best fit. The last line tells you if you are choosing a service, a pricing option, a support plan or a responsibility. Read it before the story, then remove the options that do something different.
The eight contrasts
| Easily confused | The difference that answers the question |
|---|---|
| CloudWatch, CloudTrail, AWS Config | Watches performance and alarms; records who did what; tracks how settings change |
| GuardDuty, Inspector, Shield, AWS WAF | Detects threats; scans for vulnerabilities; protects against DDoS attacks; filters web requests |
| Security groups, network ACLs | Protect individual resources and are stateful; protect whole subnets and are stateless |
| S3, EBS, EFS | Object storage for files and backups; a disk for one server; a shared file system for many servers |
| RDS, DynamoDB, ElastiCache | Managed relational database; NoSQL key-value database; in-memory cache |
| SNS, SQS, EventBridge | Pushes messages to many subscribers; queues messages for later processing; routes events between services |
| AWS Budgets, Cost Explorer, Pricing Calculator | Alerts you before you overspend; analyses past spending; estimates cost before you build |
| Reserved Instances, Savings Plans, Spot | Commit to specific instances; commit to an amount of spending per hour; use spare capacity cheaply but with interruptions |
A way to learn them
Take one row a day for eight days. Cover the right-hand column and say the difference aloud. Then write one situation that would make you choose each service. On day nine, mix the rows and run through them without the table.
The point is to hold the contrast, not the definition. A candidate who knows CloudTrail only as "a logging service" and CloudWatch only as "a monitoring service" has two true facts that do not help when a team wants to know which user deleted a resource. Only the contrast, who did what versus how it is performing, picks the answer.
What to do on a hard question
Pick the option that does the job in the last line, even if another option sounds close. If you cannot decide, give your best answer and move on. With no penalty for guessing, a guess beats a blank.
Track your habit
When you review practice sets, sort misses by habit. Missing storage or database questions usually means choosing a service that sounds close. Missing billing questions often means mixing how you buy compute with how you track spend.
