A 40-hour Cloud Practitioner plan, built backwards from your exam date

By Mustafa K. Al-Dori · Checked against official documents on 11 October 2026 · 7 min read

The short answer

AWS publishes no study-hour figure. This plan uses 25 to 50 hours. At 40 hours, 3 hours a week takes 14 weeks, 6 hours takes 7 and 12 hours takes 4, plus about one buffer week for every eight. Choose your exam date, subtract the weeks, and that date is your start.

Fix the finish line first, then count back to the start.

Place yourself in the range

AWS does not publish a study-hour figure. The CredenTrek book uses 25 to 50 hours as a working assumption. Move towards 25 if you already work with IT or AWS, and towards 50 if the cloud is new to you or English is not your first language. Your first practice test shows where you stand.

Pick a track by your real week

Track Hours a week Weeks at 40 hours
Light 2 to 4 14 at 3 hours
Standard 5 to 8 7 at 6 hours
Intensive 9 to 15 4 at 12 hours

Use the hours you have in an ordinary week, not your best week. Add about one buffer week for every eight weeks of plan, so a 7-week plan still gets one. A short plan needs less buffer than a long one.

The four stages at 40 hours

Cloud Practitioner rewards understanding over memory, so practice and review take a large share.

Stage Share Hours at 40 What you do
A, foundation About 10% 4 Rate yourself on every task statement, take a diagnostic, set up a safe account
B, first coverage About 45% 18 Work through your course once, with a short hands-on task per domain
C, practice About 30% 12 Question sets by domain, the service contrasts, review of every wrong answer
D, simulation About 15% 6 Full timed practice exams and light revision

The hours add to 40. Practice and simulation together take almost half the plan, so do not leave them for the final weekend.

The domain split across the 40 hours

Cloud Technology and Services gets 14 hours, Security and Compliance 12, Cloud Concepts 10 and Billing, Pricing, and Support 4. Move hours towards your lowest self-ratings.

Working backwards

Take a candidate who wants to have sat the exam by 12 March 2027 and can give 6 hours a week.

  1. 40 hours at 6 hours a week is 7 weeks.
  2. One buffer week makes 8.
  3. Eight weeks before 12 March 2027 is 15 January 2027.
  4. That is the start date.

Then put four dates in the diary: the end of Stage A, the end of first coverage, and two full practice exams. If the start date you calculate has already passed, move the exam date before you book, not the buffer. Each appointment can be rescheduled only twice.

Choose one route

Route What it is Suits
Official AWS Skill Builder: free digital training such as Cloud Practitioner Essentials and an official practice question set; a paid subscription adds more, including the official practice exam Disciplined self-learners
Instructor-led Classroom or virtual preparation from AWS and its training partners People who learn best in a group
Limited time One free official course, one practice-question source and a safe account Three hours a week or less

Deciding the booking date

Readiness is a pattern, not a single score. Look for consistent results across two or three full practice exams, no domain far behind the others, and the ability to explain each service contrast aloud without notes. Book against the end of your plan.

Questions readers ask

How many hours does Cloud Practitioner take?
AWS publishes no figure. A working range is 25 to 50 hours, nearer 25 with IT or AWS experience and nearer 50 if the cloud or English is new.
How long does a 40-hour plan take?
3 hours a week takes 14 weeks, 6 hours takes 7 and 12 hours takes 4, plus about one buffer week for every eight weeks.
How much of the plan should go to practice?
About 30 per cent to practice and about 15 per cent to simulation, so almost half.
