Security+ booking in five steps, with the ID and room checks that turn people away
Book Security+ in five steps through CompTIA and Pearson VUE. Bring two original unexpired IDs whose names match your registration exactly. For an OnVUE exam you need a private enclosed room, a clear desk, a webcam, a stable connection and a passed system test.
The exam-day problems you can prevent are the ones you check a week early.
The five steps
- Create a CompTIA account and a Pearson VUE account.
- Buy your voucher.
- Choose the exact exam code, SY0-701 or SY0-801, and the language.
- Choose a test centre or OnVUE, the online option.
- Save the confirmation and set reminders a week, a day and an hour ahead.
Step 3 is the one to slow down on. A booking for the wrong code is a booking for the wrong exam.
Pearson VUE delivers both options. OnVUE is not available in some countries, including South Korea and Slovenia, and proctors speak English only. Check that your country is covered before you choose it.
The identity check
Bring two original, unexpired IDs.
- The primary ID is government-issued and shows your name and a recent photo.
- The secondary ID shows your name and signature, or your name and photo.
IDs are normally issued by the country where you test. If you have no qualifying primary ID from that country, a passport from your country of citizenship can serve. Employee or student cards count as secondary only when their policy conditions are met.
Photocopies and phone photos are not originals. The first and last names must match your registration exactly. If your account differs from your ID in any way, fix the account weeks ahead, not on the morning.
The OnVUE room
For an online exam, the room must be private and enclosed. The desk and walls must be clear. You need a webcam, a stable connection and a passed system test.
Run the system test before you book and again on the day, on the same computer and in the same room. A failed test before you book leaves time to fix it. On the day, run it again before check-in. Keep a printed list of what you will remove: papers, spare screens, anything on the walls.
Which organisation answers what
Two organisations are involved, and each answers different questions.
| Contact CompTIA for | Contact Pearson VUE for |
|---|---|
| Vouchers bought from the CompTIA store | Your appointment and its changes |
| Your certification record | The test centre |
| Policies and appeals | OnVUE check-in |
| Continuing education | Technical issues on the day |
Sending a technical problem to the wrong one costs days. Keep both addresses in your calendar entry.
When a centre is the safer choice
If you cannot clear a private, enclosed room, or your connection is unreliable, a test centre removes both risks. Weigh that against the travel line in your budget, and decide when you book, not on the morning.
A week-before checklist
- The confirmation, saved and printed.
- Both IDs in hand, checked against your registration name.
- The exam code and language checked on the confirmation.
- For OnVUE, the system test passed and the room cleared.
- For a centre, the route and travel time confirmed.
Plan the last hour
Eat before you start, and arrive or log in early. In the exam, flag performance-based tasks and return to them once the multiple choice is done.
