Security+ budget: seven cost lines, three budgets and the retake calendar

By Mustafa K. Al-Dori · Checked against official documents on 11 October 2026 · 6 min read

The short answer

A Security+ budget has seven lines: voucher, course, labs, one practice-test source, a retake paid in full, travel or online set-up and continuing education. There is no wait before a second attempt, at least 14 calendar days before a third, and every attempt is paid in full.

The voucher is the line you will find. The other six are the ones you forget.

Why no price appears here

Voucher prices vary by country, currency, bundle and promotion, so a single number would be wrong for most readers. Check the price in the CompTIA store for your country on the day you buy, and write it in the first row of your table. Vouchers carry an expiry date set out in their terms, so read them before you pay and buy when your plan shows a realistic finish date, not months before. The structure below does not change.

The seven lines

Line What it covers Your figure
1 Voucher The exam attempt
2 Course Video course, book or CertMaster
3 Labs Paid lab access, if any
4 Practice tests One source, used thoroughly
5 Retake A second attempt, paid in full
6 Travel or set-up Trip to a centre, or the online room and equipment
7 Continuing education Renewal cost over three years

Line 5 is the one people skip. Plan for it as a possibility, not as a pessimistic extra.

Three budgets from the same table

  • Economy. A self-paced course, a free home lab and one practice-test source.
  • Standard. The economy budget plus official labs and retake cover. Check exactly what any retake cover pays for, because every attempt is paid in full.
  • Intensive. An instructor-led course instead of a self-paced one, with the labs and retake cover kept.

The three differ in training and labs, not in the exam fee.

Fill all seven lines for the one you choose. Then show the total twice, with line 5 and without it, so you can see what failing once would cost.

Retakes: what the policy allows

CompTIA's retake policy has three parts:

  • No waiting period between a first and second attempt.
  • At least 14 calendar days before a third or later attempt.
  • Every attempt is paid in full.

A worked case: a candidate fails on 3 March. The second attempt can be booked for any date after that. If it fails on 10 March, a third attempt cannot come earlier than 24 March, because 14 calendar days after 10 March is 24 March.

No wait is not the same as no cost. Each early attempt is another full payment, so book the second sitting when your review of the first result says you are ready, not when the rules first allow it.

Where you can save

Two savings do not risk the pass. First, ask your employer to sponsor the voucher, especially if your role requires the credential. Second, build your lab on free virtual machines instead of paying for every lab.

Use one practice-test source thoroughly. Buying three means three half-finished question banks.

Check the material before the spend

Any material you buy should name the exact exam code, SY0-701 or SY0-801, follow the official objectives and include performance-based practice. A cheap second-hand course labelled SY0-601 is two versions behind, and the hours you spend on it are lost.

What to ask your employer

Ask in writing, and name the line items: voucher, one retake and study time. Put the answer in your decision record.
