Security+ V7 or V8: choose by your finish date, not by which exam sounds newer
Both versions lead to the same CompTIA Security+ credential, so choose by your finish date. If you study V7 (SY0-701) and can sit by about the end of February 2027, take V7; it retires in English on 11 June 2027. If you start from scratch after November 2026, take V8 (SY0-801), expected on or around 17 November 2026. For Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish or Thai, V7 runs until 13 August 2027.
In late 2026 the most expensive Security+ mistake is the wrong version at the wrong time. Study V7 too slowly and you miss the window, then restart with V8 material. Buy V8 material too early and it may not exist in your language. The rule below needs one calendar and five minutes.
What changes, and on which dates?
CompTIA is replacing Security+ V7 (SY0-701) with V8 (SY0-801). For several months both will be on sale. These are the dates that matter.
| Event | Date |
|---|---|
| V8 (SY0-801) launches, in English only | Expected on or around 17 November 2026 |
| V7 (SY0-701) retires in English | 11 June 2027 |
| V7 retires in Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish and Thai | 13 August 2027 |
Treat the V8 date as CompTIA's expectation, not a promise. The V7 retirement dates are the ones to plan around.
In English, that leaves an overlap of almost seven months. During it, the choice is yours, because both versions lead to the same CompTIA Security+ credential. The format does not change either. Both have up to 90 questions in 90 minutes, a mix of multiple-choice and performance-based questions, and a pass mark of 750 on a scale of 100 to 900.
So the choice is not about prestige. It is about timing, language and material, and timing comes first.
The decision rule
Find the row that describes you. If two rows fit, the language row wins, because nothing else matters if your language is not offered.
| Your situation | Take | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You need the exam in Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish or Thai | V7, by 13 August 2027 | V8 launches in English only |
| Your employer or course has already chosen a version | That version | Confirm its date in writing |
| You are studying V7 now and can sit before spring 2027 | V7 | Your material matches and you keep time for a retake |
| You are starting from scratch after November 2026 | V8, with V8 material | You study for the version that replaces V7 |
The book says "before spring 2027". As a planning rule of thumb, not a CompTIA deadline, read that as a first sitting by the end of February 2027. That leaves time for a retake before V7 retires. By the same rule of thumb, V7 makes sense only if your plan finishes by then, as Ahmed's did. If you study V7 but finish later, bring the date forward or switch to V8 now, while switching costs least.
The rule depends on one number you may not have calculated yet: your finish date.
Work out your finish date before you choose
CompTIA publishes no single study-hour figure. CredenTrek uses 60 to 100 hours as a working assumption for someone with IT experience. Divide your total by your real weekly hours, not your best week. Then add one buffer week for every eight weeks of plan.
Three worked cases. The first and third use 80 hours; the second is Ahmed's, from the book.
- Start 12 October 2026, ten hours a week. Eight weeks plus one buffer week finishes around 14 December 2026. That is well inside the window, so a V7 candidate stays on V7.
- Ahmed, start October 2026, eight hours a week. The book does not give his total hours, but his plan sat nearer the top of the 60 to 100 hour range. It showed a finish in February 2027, well before V7 retired, so he kept his V7 course and booked for February.
- Start 1 December 2026, five hours a week. Sixteen weeks plus two buffer weeks finishes around 6 April 2027. This is a from-scratch start after November, so it is V8.
Why aim for February rather than 11 June 2027? Retakes. CompTIA sets no waiting period between a first and second attempt. Before a third or any later attempt, you must wait at least 14 calendar days. Every attempt is paid in full.
A first V7 sitting in February leaves more than three months for a second attempt before the English retirement date. A first sitting in late May leaves almost none. Miss 11 June 2027 and your next attempt is V8, with different weights and an objective you never studied.
What happens to your V7 study if you switch?
Very little is wasted. The domain names stay similar, and most V8 objectives have a close V7 match. The differences are specific, and you can plan around them.
| Domain | V7 (SY0-701) | V8 (SY0-801) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 · General Security Concepts | 12% | 16% |
| 2 · Threats, Vulnerabilities and Mitigations (V7) or Attacks (V8) | 22% | 24% |
| 3 · Security Architecture | 18% | 19% |
| 4 · Security Operations | 28% | 27% |
| 5 · Security Program Management and Oversight | 20% | 14% |
| Number of objectives | 28 | 27 |
If you move from V7 to V8, do three things:
- Add V8 objective 2.6, threats and vulnerabilities of AI usage, which has no V7 equivalent.
- Study mitigation techniques under Security Operations, because V7 objective 2.5 moves to V8 objective 4.1.
- Re-split your remaining hours by the V8 weights. General Security Concepts rises from 12 to 16 per cent, while Security Program Management and Oversight falls from 20 to 14 per cent.
Then replace your practice tests. Any material you use should name the exact exam code, follow the official objectives and include performance-based practice. One candidate found a cheap second-hand course labelled SY0-601, two versions behind, and left it. What changed with V8 (SY0-801) compares every objective.
Record your version and book the right code
Write your choice down today. Your decision record needs your goal, your fit-test answers, your version, your target exam month and a review date. A written version stops you drifting between two sets of material.
When you book through Pearson VUE, choose Security+, the exact exam code and the language. Candidates do book the wrong code and only notice on the day. Check the code on your confirmation before you close the page.
Two special cases need one more check. If your employer or course chose the version, ask whether the course includes labs and performance-based practice, and get the exam date in writing. If you need Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish or Thai, this page cannot give a date for V8 in those languages. Check the Security+ page before you plan past 13 August 2027.
If your answer is V8, start with the weights, because they shape every study week. The Security+ exam map explains the domains and question formats, and how many hours to study turns your total into dated stages. Every date on this page was checked against CompTIA's documents in October 2026.
Chapter 5 of CredenTrek For CompTIA Security+ maps all 27 V8 objectives to their closest V7 objectives, so you can see exactly which of your notes still count. Chapter 3 holds the decision record you complete before you buy anything.
- Write down your start date, your real weekly hours and a total of 80 study hours.
- Calculate your finish date, adding one buffer week for every eight weeks of plan.
- Apply the decision rule and record your version and exam code in writing.
- Check that every course and practice test you own names that exact exam code.
