An AZ-900 plan of 30 hours: stages, skill-group split and an eleven-week dated case

By Mustafa K. Al-Dori · Checked against official documents on 11 October 2026 · 7 min read

The short answer

Microsoft publishes no study-hour figure. This plan uses 20 to 40 hours. At 30 hours, 3 hours a week takes 10 weeks, 6 hours takes 5 and 10 hours takes 3, plus about one buffer week for every eight. Split the hours 12, 10 and 8 across the three skill groups.

Cloud concepts feels familiar, so it soaks up hours the larger groups need.

How many hours

Microsoft does not publish a study-hour figure. The CredenTrek book uses 20 to 40 hours as a working assumption: nearer 20 if you already work with IT or Microsoft 365, nearer 40 if the cloud is new to you. Your first attempt at the free practice assessment tells you where you stand.

Tracks at 30 hours

Track Hours a week Weeks at 30 hours
Light 2 to 4 10 at 3 hours
Standard 5 to 8 5 at 6 hours
Intensive 9 to 15 3 at 10 hours

Pick the track from your real week, not your best week. Add about one buffer week for every eight weeks of plan, so a 10-week plan gets one.

Split by skill group

Skill group and weight Hours Study first
Architecture and services, 35 to 40% 12 Core architecture, identity and security
Management and governance, 30 to 35% 10 Governance tools, monitoring tools
Cloud concepts, 25 to 30% 8 Shared responsibility, service types

Candidates often spend most of their time on cloud concepts, because it is the most familiar, although architecture and services carry the largest share.

Stages across 30 hours

Stage Share Hours at 30 What you do
A, foundation About 10% 3 Rate yourself on every skill area, take the free practice assessment once, set up a safe subscription
B, first coverage About 45% 13.5 Work through the Learn path once, with a short portal task per group
C, practice About 30% 9 Question sets by group, the service contrasts, review of every wrong answer
D, simulation About 15% 4.5 Timed practice in 45-minute blocks, the exam sandbox, light revision

The four add to 30.

An eleven-week case

Take a candidate with 3 hours a week who wants to sit by 26 February 2027.

  1. 30 divided by 3 gives 10 weeks.
  2. One buffer week makes 11.
  3. Eleven weeks before 26 February 2027 is 11 December 2026.

That is the start date. Mark the end of Stage A, the end of first coverage, and the 45-minute timed blocks in the diary. With 6 hours a week the same plan runs 5 weeks plus a buffer week, and with 10 hours 3 plus a buffer week.
