An AZ-900 study plan: 20 to 40 hours, four stages and a practice subscription that cannot surprise you

By Mustafa K. Al-Dori · Edition 2026.2, verified 9 October 2026 · 8 min read

The short answer

Microsoft publishes no study-hour figure. This plan uses 20 to 40 hours: nearer 20 if you already work with IT or Microsoft 365, nearer 40 if the cloud is new. At 30 hours, 3 hours a week takes 10 weeks, 6 hours takes 5 and 10 hours takes 3. Add one buffer week for every eight weeks. Practise in one resource group, protected by a budget, and delete it after each session.

A candidate creates a virtual machine to practise and forgets it. When the free credit ends he moves to pay as you go to keep his subscription, and the machine starts to cost money. A budget alert would have warned him.

How many hours do you need?

Microsoft does not publish a study-hour figure. The book uses 20 to 40 hours as a working assumption. Move towards 20 if you already work with IT or Microsoft 365, and towards 40 if the cloud is new to you. Your first attempt at the free practice assessment tells you where you stand.

Which track matches your real week?

Track Hours a week Weeks at 30 hours
Light 2–4 10 at 3 hours
Standard 5–8 5 at 6 hours
Intensive 9–15 3 at 10 hours

Pick the track that matches your real weekly time, not your best week. Add one buffer week for every eight weeks of plan.

How do you split the hours by skill group?

Split your hours in proportion to the skill group weights, then move hours towards the skill areas you rated lowest. For a 30-hour plan, the starting split is:

Skill group and weight Hours Study first
Architecture and services (35–40%) 12 Core architecture, identity and security
Management and governance (30–35%) 10 Governance tools, monitoring tools
Cloud concepts (25–30%) 8 Shared responsibility, service types

Candidates often spend most of their time on cloud concepts, because it is the most familiar, although architecture and services carry the largest share. The exam map lists the skill areas behind each group.

What are the four stages?

AZ-900 rewards understanding over memory, so practice questions and review deserve a large share of your hours.

Stage Share Hours at 30 What you do
A. Foundation about 10% 3 Rate yourself on every skill area, take the free practice assessment once, set up your safe subscription
B. First coverage about 45% 13.5 Work through the Learn path once, with a short portal task for each group
C. Practice about 30% 9 Question sets by group, the service contrasts and review of every wrong answer
D. Simulation about 15% 4.5 Timed practice in 45-minute blocks, the exam sandbox and light revision

How do you set up a safe practice subscription?

The exam does not test building skills, but a little time in the portal makes services easier to tell apart. Microsoft's free account currently offers credit for the first 30 days and some services free for 12 months. Set it up in this order:

  1. Create the account with your personal Microsoft account and turn on multifactor authentication.
  2. In Cost Management, create a budget at a small amount with an email alert.
  3. Create one resource group for all practice work, and add a tag such as "purpose: study".
  4. After each session, delete the resource group, which removes everything inside it.
  5. Before the free period ends, decide on purpose whether to move to pay as you go.

With that done, try five short tasks. Create a storage account, apply a resource lock and try to delete it, and assign a built-in Azure Policy. Then read Azure Advisor and price a small virtual machine in the pricing calculator. Each task links to a skill area in the exam map.

What does a dated plan look like?

Nour, a sales coordinator in the book, had 6 hours a week and planned 30 hours. That gave her 5 weeks. She set a budget alert on day one, deleted her resource group after each session and booked her exam for week 6, after two strong practice results.

Work backwards: pick your exam date, subtract any buffer weeks, subtract the weeks your track needs and that is your start date. Place the end of stage A, the end of first coverage and your timed practice blocks in your diary.

Which study route should you pick?

Route What it is Who it suits
Official Free, self-paced Microsoft Learn learning paths, plus the free practice assessment and exam sandbox linked from the exam page Self-learners; costs nothing beyond the exam fee
Instructor-led Courses from Microsoft and its training partners People who learn best in a group
Limited time The free Learn path, the free practice assessment and the safe subscription Three hours a week or less

Whatever you choose, confirm that it names AZ-900 and the skills measured as of 20 July 2026. The changes guide explains the renamed products.

How do you know you are ready?

Readiness is a pattern, not a single score. Look for consistent results across two or three attempts at practice questions and no skill group far behind the others. You should also be able to explain each contrast aloud without notes. Then book: cost, booking and exam day covers the steps, and ten original questions give you a first check.

Your next step
  1. Create your free account with a personal Microsoft account and turn on multifactor authentication.
  2. Create a small budget with an email alert in Cost Management.
  3. Create one resource group for practice and tag it "purpose: study".
  4. Divide your hours by your real weekly time and place your timed practice blocks in your diary.

Questions readers ask

How many hours does AZ-900 take?
Microsoft publishes no figure. A working range is 20 to 40 hours: nearer 20 if you already work with IT or Microsoft 365, nearer 40 if the cloud is new to you.
Will practising in Azure cost money?
It should not, if you follow a safe setup: a budget with an email alert, one resource group for all practice, deleting that group after each session and deciding deliberately before the free period ends.
Where do I start studying for free?
Microsoft Learn offers free, self-paced learning paths for AZ-900, and the exam page links a free practice assessment and a free exam sandbox.
How much of the plan should go to practice?
About 30 per cent to practice questions and about 15 per cent to simulation, so almost half the plan.
