AZ-900 after 20 July 2026: a translation table for the old Azure names
Microsoft updated the AZ-900 skills measured on 20 July 2026. The skill groups and weights did not change, but product names did: Azure Active Directory is now Microsoft Entra ID and Azure Security Center is now Microsoft Defender for Cloud. Translate old names, and check the study guide date.
The skills are the same. The labels are not.
What changed, and what did not
Microsoft updated the AZ-900 skills measured on 20 July 2026. The skill groups and weights did not change. Microsoft marked minor changes in three skill areas:
- Describe Azure compute and networking services.
- Describe features and tools for managing and deploying resources.
- Describe monitoring tools in Azure.
If your material predates 20 July 2026, it may not reflect those edits. Treat any older list with care.
The weights still apply
| Skill group | Weight | Skill areas |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Describe cloud concepts | 25 to 30% | 3 |
| 2 Describe Azure architecture and services | 35 to 40% | 4 |
| 3 Describe Azure management and governance | 30 to 35% | 4 |
That is 11 skill areas in all.
The translation table
Product names have changed more than the skills. Material written before the renames teaches names the exam no longer uses.
| Older name | Current name in the study guide |
|---|---|
| Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) | Microsoft Entra ID |
| Azure AD Domain Services | Microsoft Entra Domain Services |
| Azure AD Conditional Access | Microsoft Entra Conditional Access |
| Azure Security Center | Microsoft Defender for Cloud |
| Azure Purview | Microsoft Purview |
Print the table and keep it beside your notes. When a question bank says "Azure AD", write "Entra ID" next to it before you move on.
Why this costs marks
A candidate who memorised "Azure Security Center" as the tool that assesses and protects resources may see "Microsoft Defender for Cloud" on the exam and may not realise the two names mean the same tool. The concept is identical. Only the label moved, so the marks are easy to lose and easy to keep.
Four checks on any material
- It names AZ-900 and the skills measured as of 20 July 2026.
- It follows the skill areas in the study guide.
- It uses the current names, such as Microsoft Entra ID and Defender for Cloud.
- The refund policy is in writing.
If material fails the first or third check, treat it as background reading, not your main source. Marks come from the current study guide, so open it first.
Other-language versions
The English version is updated first. Microsoft states that other languages usually follow about eight weeks later, so a candidate sitting in Arabic or another language soon after an update may briefly see the previous version. Check the study guide for the version that applies to you.
You do not need to start again
Concepts have not moved. Download the current study guide, note the skills-measured date, fix the three marked areas, translate the names and rate yourself from 1 to 5 on the 11 skill areas. Your three lowest scores become your first targets.
