Is CCNA worth it for you this year? What it proves, who hires for it and a four-question test

By Mustafa K. Al-Dori · Edition 2026.2, verified 9 October 2026 · 6 min read

The short answer

CCNA is worth it if you want a network technician, operations or junior engineer role, you can give seven hours a week for four to six months, and your target employers value it within a year. It opens doors; it does not replace experience. Four yes answers to the fit test below mean go now. Three mean fix the weak point first, and two or fewer mean choose an earlier step.

Plenty of people pass CCNA and still wait months for a first network job. Others pass it, spend a Saturday morning fixing a law office's Wi-Fi, and get hired by the same firm's IT supplier. The credential is the same. What differs is what they decided before they paid.

What does CCNA prove, and what does it not?

The Cisco Certified Network Associate is Cisco's associate-level networking credential. You earn it by passing one exam, 200-301 CCNA. It says you can build, operate and troubleshoot small and medium networks: switching, routing, IP addressing, wireless, network services, security and the automation that now manages them.

The skills travel. Subnetting, VLANs, spanning tree and OSPF work the same way on most vendors' equipment. Cisco commands are simply the language the exam uses.

It does not prove that you can design a large enterprise or service provider network, or run one alone. It says little about other vendors' interfaces, and nothing about specialist areas such as voice or data centre fabrics. Interviewers test judgement separately, which is why the guides in this series keep returning to lab proof.

Cisco groups its credentials into four levels. Below CCNA sit the entry-level Cisco Certified Support Technician (CCST) credentials. Above it sit the professional credentials such as CCNP Enterprise, and at the top the expert-level CCIE.

Which roles ask for it, and what is the work really like?

CCNA appears in advertisements for network technicians, junior network engineers, network support and operations centre staff. It is also named for systems administrators who look after network equipment, field engineers and pre-sales technical staff at Cisco partners.

Do not picture grand architecture. A first week often starts with tickets: a user who cannot reach a printer, a port that keeps going down. Midweek brings a planned change, such as a new VLAN for a new floor, approved in advance and made in an evening window. The week ends with documentation and updated diagrams.

The credential is worth more beside practical skill. Reading packet captures, basic Linux and Python, and a working knowledge of one cloud platform all set candidates apart. So does a clear written change plan.

One of the book's candidates, Basel, worked in desktop support and kept waiting for the network team to fix connection problems. CCNA showed him why the faults happened, and within a year he was handling first-line switch and VLAN issues himself. That is a realistic result: a better role inside the same career, not a leap.

What does the pay data say?

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median annual wage of US$99,130 for network and computer systems administrators in May 2025. For computer support specialists, a common first role, it reports US$62,890. It projects that employment in both occupations will fall slightly from 2025 to 2035, while openings still arise as people move on.

Read those figures with care. They describe every worker in those occupations in the United States, many with years of experience. A first role reached through CCNA usually pays less, and pay in your own country follows local rates.

What moves a network salary Why it matters
Experience and scope A year in a network operations centre counts for more than another exam
City and sector Telecoms, finance and Cisco partners often pay more
On-call duties They can change what a role pays, so ask how they are compensated
Security and cloud skills They widen the roles you can apply for
Further credentials CCNP helps once the job uses it

For your own market, collect three dated sources that agree: an official statistics office where one exists, a recruitment firm's salary guide and live advertisements that state a figure. Record a range, not a single number.

The four-question fit test

Answer honestly. Nobody else will see your answers.

Question If the answer is no
Are you comfortable with basic IT, such as operating systems and the IP settings on a computer? Build foundations first with CompTIA A+ or a Cisco CCST credential
Can you give at least seven hours a week for the next four to six months, including lab time? Wait until your schedule can hold it, or plan a longer timeline
Will your target employers value the credential within a year? Check job advertisements before you pay
Can you afford the full budget, including a possible retake? Choose the economy route in the cost guide

Four yes answers mean go now. Three mean go after you fix the weak point, with a dated plan to fix it. Two or fewer mean choose an earlier step.

What to choose if the test says wait

If you are new to IT, CompTIA A+ or a Cisco CCST credential builds the foundations. If your goal is security rather than networks, CompTIA Security+ may serve you better this year. If your employer runs mainly in the cloud, AWS Cloud Practitioner or Microsoft AZ-900 may come first.

If the test says go, the next decision is the exam version. Cisco replaces v1.1 with v2.0 on 3 February 2027, and the choice depends on your finish date. CCNA v1.1 or v2.0: choose by your finish date gives you the rule, and the CCNA exam map shows what the exam asks.

Write your decision down in one page: your goal, your four answers, your version, your target exam month and a review date. Chapter 3 of CredenTrek For Cisco CCNA walks you through it, and Chapter 2 lists the roles and search terms to test against real advertisements.

Your next step
  1. Write one sentence naming the network role you want within two years.
  2. Answer the four fit questions and count your yes answers.
  3. Find five job advertisements in your city that mention CCNA and note the other skills they ask for.
  4. Write a one-page decision record with your goal, your answers and a review date.

Questions readers ask

Do I need experience or another credential before I can book CCNA?
No. CCNA has no prerequisites, so anyone can book it. Cisco's CCNA page says the training assumes little to no networking knowledge, but it recommends regular hands-on practice with routers and switches. Treat that practice as the real requirement.
Does CCNA only help if I want to work with Cisco equipment?
No. Subnetting, VLANs, spanning tree and OSPF work the same way on most vendors' equipment. Cisco commands are the language of the exam, but the concepts travel to other platforms.
Is CCNA still valuable now that so much has moved to the cloud?
Cloud networks still rest on addressing, routing and security, and many organisations keep their own networks too. Pairing CCNA with one cloud platform is a common way to widen your options.
Does CCNA last for life once I pass?
No. It is valid for three years. You renew by passing the current CCNA exam again, by passing a qualifying higher-level Cisco exam or by earning 30 continuing education credits.
