Keep the CCNA you passed: three years, three routes and 30 credits without a last-minute scramble
CCNA is valid for three years. You renew by passing the current CCNA exam again, by passing a qualifying higher-level Cisco exam or by earning 30 continuing education (CE) credits. A renewal starts a new three-year period from the date you complete it. If you let it lapse, the credential becomes inactive and you must meet the full current requirements again, which means passing the current exam.
Nobody forgets to renew on purpose. They forget until the final months, discover that last year's training was never recorded, and find the credential inactive the week a job application asks for it. A calendar prevents all of it.
How long does CCNA last?
CCNA is valid for three years. When you renew, the new three-year period runs from the date you complete the renewal, not from the date your old one would have ended. Your expiry date appears in your Cisco certification profile.
What are the three routes?
Cisco lists three routes for associate-level credentials such as CCNA.
| Route | What you do | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| Pass the exam again | Sit the current CCNA exam | You have no other plan and time to study |
| Advance a level | Pass a qualifying higher-level Cisco exam | You are heading for CCNP anyway |
| Continuing Education | Earn 30 CE credits through Cisco's Continuing Education programme | You prefer steady learning to one big exam |
Check Cisco's renewal and Continuing Education pages for the credit total, the qualifying activities and your expiry date before you commit to a route. Rules change.
Hisham, in the book, passed the CCNP Enterprise core exam in his second year as a CCNA holder. He confirmed with Cisco that it renewed his CCNA, which saved him collecting credits separately. Jana did the same after a year in a network operations centre, and her employer paid.
What happens if you let it lapse?
If your three years end without renewal, the credential becomes inactive. To reactivate it you must meet the full current requirements again, which means passing the current exam. Keep evidence of every activity you submit, because you may need to prove it later.
A renewal calendar that works
Thirty credits over three years is ten a year. That is a pace, not a deadline.
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| The week you pass | Add your expiry date to your calendar with reminders at 12, 6 and 3 months before it |
| Every month | Submit any qualifying activity in the month you complete it |
| Every six months | Check your credit total against the target of about 10 a year |
| Month 24 | Decide: CE credits, a higher-level exam or the same exam again |
| Month 30 | If you are short, switch to the exam route while there is still time to study |
If you plan a CCNP exam, time it so it also renews your CCNA. Confirm with Cisco first that the exam you plan qualifies.
Should you renew, or move on?
Renewal keeps what you have. It does not decide what is next. Often the best next step is experience: a year of hands-on network work adds more value than another exam, and it makes CCNP far easier.
Choose the next credential from your goal. Enterprise networks point to CCNP Enterprise. Network security points to CompTIA Security+ and then CCNP Security. Automation points to Cisco's automation track with Python practice. Cloud networking points to AWS Cloud Practitioner or AZ-900, then a cloud networking credential. Service provider networks point to CCNP Service Provider. Check Cisco's certification roadmap for current track names before you plan.
If you are still choosing, the first guide in this series has the fit test, and the cost guide lists the retake and wait rules in case you renew by exam. Chapter 15 of CredenTrek For Cisco CCNA holds the full renewal plan, and Appendix D has a message template for credits that are not recorded.
- Add your expiry date to your calendar with reminders at 12, 6 and 3 months before it.
- Read Cisco's Continuing Education page and note the credit total and qualifying activities.
- Create one folder for evidence of every activity you submit.
- Write your two-year goal and decide whether it needs a new credential or more experience.
