Check your TOEFL books and apps: what the January 2026 redesign made obsolete

By Mustafa K. Al-Dori · Checked against official documents on 11 October 2026 · 6 min read

The short answer

On 21 January 2026 TOEFL iBT moved scoring to a 1 to 6 scale and dropped the integrated essay and the four old speaking tasks. Section time fell to about 90 minutes, Reading and Listening became adaptive, and there are no scheduled breaks. Audit every book and app against the twelve current task types.

You can spend six weeks rehearsing tasks that no longer exist and feel productive the entire time.

What moved

On 21 January 2026, ETS redesigned TOEFL iBT. The four sections stay the same. What sits inside them is different.

Area Before From 21 January 2026
Score scale 0 to 120 total; 0 to 30 per section 1 to 6 per section and overall, in half bands
Length Just under 2 hours About 90 minutes of section time
Reading and Listening Fixed sets of longer passages and lectures Shorter tasks; two-stage adaptive
Writing An integrated essay and an academic discussion Build a Sentence, Write an Email, Write for an Academic Discussion
Speaking Four tasks, including integrated tasks Listen and Repeat, and Take an Interview

Five signs a book is out of date

  1. Practice scores reported out of 120.
  2. A 20-minute integrated essay.
  3. Four speaking tasks, some of them integrated.
  4. Long reading passages as the main reading task.
  5. No mention of Complete the Words, Listen and Repeat or Build a Sentence.

Any one of these means the material was written for the old test. Use it for general English practice if you like, but not as a mock test.

What a candidate loses

Picture someone who works through a second-hand course for six weeks. On the day, she meets Complete the Words and Listen and Repeat for the first time. Her Speaking comes back at 4.0 against a target of 4.5. The English was there. The rehearsal was for a different test.

A short audit

Spread everything you own on one list. For each item, write down whether it names the 2026 task types and whether it reports scores on the 1 to 6 scale. Keep what passes. Move what fails to a general English pile.

Before you buy anything new, check the same two things. ETS offers a free official sample test and a free eight-week TOEFL iBT Test Prep Planner, and its TestReady portal adds practice tests and courses. Use the free sample first.

Rehearse the length

About 90 minutes of section time sounds short, and it feels different with no scheduled breaks. ETS advises allowing about two hours for the whole appointment. If you have only ever practised one section at a time, the first full run will teach you something. Do it in your last stage of preparation: a full timed practice test, start to finish, with no pause. Eat and drink beforehand, as you will on the day.

Expect adaptivity

Reading and Listening run in two stages, so the second set may be harder than the first. Writing and Speaking do not adapt, and every candidate sees the same number of tasks there.

Check the specifications again

ETS states that the 2026 test specifications may still change slightly. Check the section times and task names on the TOEFL iBT test content page before you buy materials, and again before test day.

Questions readers ask

Are there breaks in the redesigned test?
No. There are no scheduled breaks between sections, at a test centre or in Home Edition.
Can I still use a book printed before 2026?
Only for general English practice. Its tasks and scoring were written for the old test, so never use it as a mock test.
Do Writing and Speaking adapt?
No. Only Reading and Listening adapt, in two stages. Writing and Speaking are the same for every candidate.
