TOEFL iBT or IELTS? Let your institutions decide first, then your strengths
Choose the test your institutions accept. If a university, funder or visa route accepts only one, the decision is made. If all accept both, compare the formats: TOEFL iBT takes about two hours, with Speaking recorded on a computer, while IELTS Speaking is face to face. Then confirm that every institution accepts Home Edition before you test at home.
You choose TOEFL because a friend did, or Home Edition because it saves a trip. Weeks later a visa route or one university on your list turns out not to accept it. The score is valid, the fee is spent, and you start again.
Which tests do your institutions accept?
Start here, before you compare formats or read a single tip. Many universities accept both TOEFL iBT and IELTS. Some accept only one, and visa routes often name specific tests. If only one test is accepted, the decision is made for you.
Work and migration need the most care. Some employers, licensing bodies and immigration authorities accept TOEFL iBT, and others do not. UK visa routes that require a Secure English Language Test, for example, accept only the tests the UK government approves for that route.
This page prints no score requirements, because TOEFL has no pass mark. ETS sets no passing or failing scores, and each institution decides what it needs. Requirements differ by level and programme, and some departments set a separate minimum for Speaking.
So build a list of every place that will receive your scores. Include scholarship bodies, whose requirements can be higher than the university's own and whose deadlines can come earlier. For each one, find the official requirement page and save the link. On university sites, the requirement often sits on the programme page, not the general admissions page.
Plan for later goals too. A master's place in Canada may accept TOEFL iBT while a later work permit lists its own approved tests. Check that list now, not in two years.
One more check. ETS runs other TOEFL products, such as tests that schools use internally. Confirm that each institution asks for TOEFL iBT, not another TOEFL test.
When both tests are accepted, how do they differ?
Only now does preference matter. The main differences between the two tests look like this.
| Feature | TOEFL iBT | IELTS |
|---|---|---|
| Run by | ETS | British Council, IDP IELTS and Cambridge University Press & Assessment |
| Total time | About 2 hours | 2 hours 45 minutes |
| Speaking | Recorded on computer | Face to face with an examiner |
| Reading and Listening | Adaptive: the second set depends on the first | Fixed sets of 40 questions |
| Score scale | 1 to 6, in half bands, since January 2026 | Bands 0 to 9, in half bands |
| One weak section | MyBest combines best section scores; no single-section retake | One Skill Retake within 60 days of a computer test |
| Results | About 3 days | 1 to 5 days on computer |
| Validity | Two years | Two years recommended |
Three rows usually decide it. The first is Speaking. TOEFL iBT records you answering on a computer, through tasks such as Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview. If you speak more naturally to a person, the IELTS examiner may suit you better.
The second is length and pace. TOEFL iBT has about 90 minutes of section time, no scheduled breaks and short, fast tasks. If you type quickly and like short computer tasks, that format may favour you.
The third is what happens when one section falls short. IELTS offers a retake of one skill. TOEFL iBT has no single-section retake, but MyBest combines your best section scores from valid tests in the last two years. That only helps if your institutions accept MyBest, so ask them.
Try an official sample of each test before you decide. Doing both tells you more than any comparison table. If IELTS wins, CredenTrek For IELTS (No. 02) covers that test in full.
Test centre or Home Edition?
If TOEFL iBT is your test, you still have to choose where to take it. At a test centre you sit at an authorised centre, on its equipment, with staff who check your identity. With TOEFL iBT Home Edition you take the same test on your own computer, with a live remote proctor watching throughout.
Both give the same scores. The real questions are whether every institution on your list accepts Home Edition scores, and whether your room and computer meet the rules.
Those rules are strict. You must be alone in a closed room and stay in view of the proctor throughout. The session is recorded, and screen-sharing or remote-access software must be closed. Run the ETS equipment check before you pay, not the evening before.
| Point | Test centre | Home Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Arrival or check-in | Arrive at least 30 minutes before your start time | Check-in opens up to 15 minutes before your start time |
| If you are late | You cannot test and receive no refund | If check-in is not finished within 30 minutes after your start time, the test is cancelled with no refund |
| Identity | Checked by centre staff | If ETS asks, a check in its mobile app at least 48 hours before the test |
When an institution's page is silent, email the admissions office and keep the answer in writing. If no clear reply arrives in time, book a test centre. Knowing where you will test is only half the decision. The other half is when.
When should you wait before booking?
Wait if your practice score sits more than half a band below your target on the 1 to 6 scale, and your deadline is close. A rushed test usually leads to a second registration fee.
Take a candidate whose target is 5.0 in every section. Her practice profile reads Reading 5.0, Listening 5.5, Writing 4.5 and Speaking 4.0. Speaking is a full band short. She should close that gap first, then register.
Booking too early also costs you if you then move the date. The Information Bulletin requires changes at least four full days before your test. A timely cancellation refunds half the original test fee, and a later request receives no refund. The ETS fees page listed a rescheduling fee of US$69 in October 2026.
Retaking is not instant either. You cannot test more than once in any three-day period. Each attempt also needs a fee and enough preparation to change the result. How long to prepare for TOEFL turns a gap like that Speaking band into weeks.
Write the decision down today
A decision that is not written down tends to change every week. Keep a short test choice record:
- The institutions, and the tests each one accepts
- Whether each accepts Home Edition
- Your target score for each section, on the 1 to 6 scale
- A link to every official requirement page
- The date you will review the decision
Many pages still state requirements on the old 0 to 120 scale. The TOEFL score scale from 1 to 6 shows how to convert them into targets. The facts on this page were checked against ETS's official pages and the 2026–27 Information Bulletin in October 2026.
Chapter 3 of CredenTrek For TOEFL holds the test choice record and a two-question flowchart that settles the test and the place. Chapter 4 then turns your identity and Home Edition checks into a list you can complete before you pay.
- List every institution that will receive your scores, including scholarship bodies and visa routes.
- Open each official requirement page and note which tests it accepts and whether it mentions Home Edition.
- Try an official sample of TOEFL iBT and of IELTS if both tests are accepted everywhere.
- Write a test choice record with your test, where you will take it and a target for each section.
