CISSP cost, booking and exam day: the real budget, the retake waits and the fee that comes every year
ISC2's published exam fee is US$749 in most regions, plus any tax, with euro and pound prices in Europe and the UK. After you pass, membership costs US$135 a year, or US$50 for Associates. A purchase must be scheduled and taken within a set period. After a failed attempt, the book gives waits of 30, 60 and then 90 days, with at most four attempts in 12 months; confirm them in ISC2's retake policy when you book.
Candidates budget for the exam fee and nothing else. Then a course, practice tests, a possible retake and the annual maintenance fee arrive, and the true cost is much higher than planned.
What does CISSP cost?
ISC2 publishes the fee: US$749 in the Americas, the Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific and most other regions. Prices in euros and pounds apply in Europe and the United Kingdom, and tax depends on where you test. Check the price shown on ISC2's pricing page on the day you buy.
The exam fee is the start of the bill.

Which of the three budgets is yours?
- Economy. One study guide, one question bank and self-study.
- Standard. Adds an online course and a package with a second attempt.
- Intensive. Adds an instructor-led boot camp.
The three differ in training, not in the exam or annual fees. In every budget, include the first annual maintenance fee. Omar, in the book, chose the standard budget. His employer paid the exam package with a second attempt and the first annual fee. He passed first time and used the saved budget for a cloud security course the following year.
To save without cutting your chances, ask your employer to sponsor the exam and the annual fee, which many do for senior roles. Use your own work experience as study cases, which costs nothing. Join a local ISC2 chapter or study group for free discussion, and book only when your practice results are stable.
How do you book?
- Create your ISC2 account with your name exactly as on your government ID.
- Buy the CISSP exam, alone or with a package that includes a second attempt.
- Schedule through Pearson VUE at an authorised test centre, in your chosen language.
- Choose a date that fits the end of your plan, within the period your purchase allows.
- Save the confirmation and set reminders a week, a day and an hour before.
The exam is offered in Chinese, English, German, Japanese and Spanish. ISC2's CISSP page shows that an exam purchase must be scheduled and taken within a set period, so check that period on the day you buy. Buying early "to lock in a price" can leave you with a plan that cannot fit the window.
What are the retake rules?
The book, checked in October 2026, gives ISC2's retake policy as follows: after a first unsuccessful attempt you wait 30 days, after a second 60 days, and after a third or later 90 days. You may sit the exam no more than four times in any 12-month period. Each attempt is paid in full unless your package includes a retake.
Third-party sites quote different waiting periods, so confirm the current figures in ISC2's retake policy on the day you book. Whichever figures apply, the lesson is the same: a narrow fail cannot be fixed next week, and your plan has to move by a month at least.
What happens on exam day, and after?
Bring the identification that ISC2's Candidate Information Bulletin requires, with your name exactly as registered. Arrive early, because centres check identity and take your photograph before the exam. Breaks count towards the three hours.
You receive an unofficial result at the test centre, and ISC2 emails the official result. If you pass, start your endorsement at once. You have nine months to complete it, and the experience record you built beforehand makes it quick. If something goes wrong at the centre, report it to the staff, write down the case number and contact Pearson VUE the same day. Ziad, in the book, did that after a power failure and received a new appointment at no charge.
Once certified, remember the annual fee. It is due each year on your membership anniversary, and a late payment can put the credential at risk, so put the date in your calendar.
Appendix C of CredenTrek For CISSP is the budget template, Appendix E the exam-day checklist and Appendix D the message templates for ISC2 and Pearson VUE. The renewal guide covers the annual fee and CPE credits in detail.
- Check the exam price, package options and tax for your region on ISC2's pricing page.
- Fill in a three-level budget in your own currency, including the first annual fee.
- Create your ISC2 account with your name exactly as on your government ID.
- Read ISC2's retake policy and the Candidate Information Bulletin before you book.
