From three passes to the charter: work hours, references, dues and what you may call yourself

By Mustafa K. Al-Dori · Edition 2026.2, verified 9 October 2026 · 7 min read

The short answer

Passing three levels is not enough. The charter needs at least 4,000 hours of qualifying work over a minimum of 36 months, professional references and active CFA Institute membership. You may use the letters CFA only while you remain a member in good standing. Log your work hours from your first investment role.

A candidate passes Level III, celebrates, then finds his work history does not yet reach 4,000 qualifying hours over 36 months. His charter waits a year while he builds it. A work-hours log started on day one removes that surprise.

What does the charter need beyond the exams?

After you pass all three levels and complete the practical skills modules, you apply for membership and the charter. CFA Institute requires:

Requirement Detail
Exams All three levels, with the skills modules
Work experience At least 4,000 hours of qualifying work
Time span Over a minimum of 36 months
References Three, or two if one is a professional member of the local society you apply to
Membership Annual dues and an annual renewal of the Code commitment

The work must involve investment decision-making or produce work that informs it. It can come before, during or after the Program, which means a role you held before you registered may already count.

Which work counts?

CFA Institute's test is the nature of the work, not the job title. Analyse your role against the description: does it involve making investment decisions, or producing work that informs them, such as research, valuation, credit analysis, portfolio analytics or risk reporting? Ask your manager to confirm in writing which parts of your role qualify, and check the current rules on cfainstitute.org before you rely on an estimate. This guide gives the headline requirements, not a ruling on your case.

Samira, in the book, logged her work hours from her first analyst job. When she passed Level III she already had 4,600 qualifying hours over four years and two references from society members. She applied the next week.

How do you keep a work-hours log?

Start the log in your first investment role. For each role, record:

  1. The employer and your job title.
  2. Your start and end dates.
  3. Your average weekly hours.
  4. The investment duties you carried out, in a sentence or two.

The arithmetic is simple. At 40 hours a week, 4,000 hours takes 100 weeks. The 36-month minimum is the slower condition for a full-time worker, so the calendar, not the hours, sets the earliest date. Part-time or mixed roles may need longer to reach the hours.

Who should be your references?

CFA Institute asks for three professional references, or two if one of them is a professional member of the local society you apply to. Choose people who have supervised or closely observed your work and who will answer promptly. Tell them early what the form asks, and give them your log so their answers match your record.

How do you keep the right to use the letters?

To keep using the letters CFA, you must remain a CFA Institute member in good standing, which means paying annual dues. If you stop meeting the annual requirements, you lose the right to use the designation until membership is restored. Members also renew their commitment to the Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct each year.

If you stop paying dues, your membership lapses and you may not use the letters CFA. Serious breaches of the Code and Standards can lead to sanctions, including the loss of the charter. Keep your records in order and your conduct beyond question.

What can you write on your CV before the charter?

Be exact. Each stage of the Program has accurate wording, and claiming more than you have earned is an ethics matter, not a style choice.

Stage Accurate wording
Passed Level I "Passed Level I of the CFA Program"
Registered for or studying for Level II "Level II candidate in the CFA Program"
All exams passed, charter not yet awarded Describe the exams passed. Do not use the letters CFA
Charter awarded and membership active "CFA" or "CFA charterholder"

The letters CFA come only after you have the charter and an active membership. Using them early, or after a lapse, is not permitted. The eligibility guide covers the exam rules, and the first guide in this series explains what the charter proves to employers.

A simple membership calendar

  • From your first investment role: log your work hours and duties.
  • Before you pass Level III: line up your references.
  • After the charter: set reminders for your annual dues and the Code commitment.
  • Each year: record the professional learning you complete.

Dues are a recurring cost, so include them in the budget you build with the cost guide. Check the current dues and annual requirements on CFA Institute's membership pages before you apply. Chapter 15 of CredenTrek For CFA has a membership plan.

Your next step
  1. Start a work-hours log today: each role, its dates, weekly hours and investment duties.
  2. Calculate your earliest date: 36 months of qualifying work and 4,000 hours.
  3. Choose three references, or two plus a society member, and tell them early.
  4. Write your CV wording for your current stage and check it against the table.
