Keep your AWS Cloud Practitioner active: three years, four renewal routes and a calendar that never lapses

By Mustafa K. Al-Dori · Edition 2026.2, verified 9 October 2026 · 5 min read

The short answer

AWS certifications are valid for three years, and the new period runs from the date you complete the renewal step. There are four routes: the AWS Cloud Quest recertify course (open in the final six months, no exam), the latest Cloud Practitioner exam, any Associate exam or any Professional exam. If a cycle ends without renewal, the credential expires and the badge no longer verifies.

Holders forget the expiry date and discover it when a recruiter cannot verify their badge. The game-based renewal route was open for six months before it. A calendar entry made on the day you passed prevents the whole problem.

How long does the credential last?

AWS certifications are valid for three years. When you renew, the new three-year period runs from the date you complete the renewal step. Note your expiry date in your calendar on the day you pass, with reminders at 12 months, 6 months and 3 months before it.

What are the four ways to renew?

AWS lists four routes for Cloud Practitioner.

Route Detail
AWS Cloud Quest: Recertify Cloud Practitioner A game-based course with no exam, open when your credential is due to expire within six months
Pass the latest Cloud Practitioner exam The current version of the exam
Pass any Associate-level AWS exam Renews Cloud Practitioner as well
Pass any Professional-level AWS exam Renews Cloud Practitioner as well

The Cloud Quest route is the lightest, but only in the final six months. If you plan an Associate credential within three years anyway, time it so it also renews Cloud Practitioner, and you need no separate renewal step.

Mahmoud, in the book, passed Solutions Architect Associate in his second year as a Cloud Practitioner holder. The Associate pass renewed his Cloud Practitioner too, so he had nothing separate to plan.

What happens if the cycle ends?

If your three years end without renewal, the credential expires and you would need to pass the current exam again. Your badge will no longer verify, so employers may treat it as missing. The renewal rules can change, so confirm that the Cloud Quest route is still offered, and check its cost, when your window opens.

A simple renewal calendar

  1. On the day you pass, note the expiry date three years ahead.
  2. Set reminders at 12 months, 6 months and 3 months before it.
  3. At six months, look at the Cloud Quest route.
  4. If you intend to take an Associate exam, plan it before the expiry date.
  5. After renewing, set the next three-year date.

What should you do with your badge and records?

AWS issues your digital badge through Credly, and employers use it to verify the credential. Add the badge to LinkedIn on the day you pass, and keep the link in your CV. When you renew, check that the badge shows the new dates. If a recruiter clicks a badge that no longer verifies, they may treat the credential as missing, however much you know.

Keep three records in one note: your AWS Certification Account login, your candidate ID and your expiry date. If anything goes wrong with renewal, AWS Training and Certification handles your account, vouchers, results, badges and renewal, so that is the team to contact, and not AWS Support for cloud accounts.

How do you keep your knowledge current?

The cloud changes quickly. Since the current exam was launched, AWS has renamed services, replaced its support plans and changed its free offer for new accounts. A renewal is also a moment to check that what you know is what is currently taught. The changes guide lists what has moved.

Renewing for a business role is cheap insurance. For technical roles it fits into a bigger plan: pair the credential with two small projects and a next step by goal. The comparison guide lists the sensible next credentials. Chapter 15 of CredenTrek For AWS Cloud Practitioner has the renewal plan, and the verification step is the same as always: read the AWS recertification page and check your expiry date in your AWS Certification Account.

Your next step
  1. Add your expiry date to your calendar with reminders at 12, 6 and 3 months before it.
  2. Check your expiry date in your AWS Certification Account.
  3. At six months, confirm the Cloud Quest recertify route is still offered and check its cost.
  4. If you plan an Associate exam, schedule it before the expiry date.
