Half a band short on IELTS: lay out the 60 days before you decide
After a computer test, one skill short can mean a One Skill Retake, which must be booked and sat within 60 days of test day and is accepted only if your organisations allow it. An Enquiry on Results suits a mark well below your practice level. Two or more short skills point to a full retake.
The first instinct is to book again that evening. The calendar is a better first step.
A result, a target and a gap
Imagine a candidate who needed 7.0 in every skill and received Listening 8.0, Reading 7.5, Writing 6.5 and Speaking 7.0. The test was taken on computer. Writing is half a band short.
Before booking anything, compare the result with the last two practice tests, skill by skill. If Writing averaged 6.5 in practice, the mark is accurate and the problem is preparation. If it averaged 7.0 and the other skills matched, the problem may be the mark.
Three routes
| Situation | Route | Key condition |
|---|---|---|
| One skill short, in line with practice | One Skill Retake | Computer test; sit it within 60 days |
| One skill well below practice | Enquiry on Results | Fee refunded if your band changes |
| More than one skill short | Full retake | Rebuild the plan first |
One Skill Retake lets you sit a single skill again. You can take one retake for each full test, results arrive within three to five days, and you receive a new Test Report Form with the new skill score and your three original scores. You then choose which form to use, so a weaker retake does not cancel your first result.
Before paying, confirm that every organisation accepts One Skill Retake results. Some do not, and silence on a requirement page is not a yes. Ask in writing and keep the reply.
Count the days
Suppose the test was taken on 3 March. Sixty days from that date falls on 2 May, but the rule is to sit within 60 days, so plan to sit by 1 May and ask your centre to confirm the exact last day. Then work backwards.
An Enquiry on Results can take up to 21 days. If you apply on 8 March and wait the full 21 days, the answer arrives around 29 March and about five weeks of the window remain. If the band does not change, you have lost both the fee and the time you could have spent practising.
For a candidate whose Writing averaged 6.5 in practice, the record points to preparation, not the mark. A sensible plan is two to four focused weeks on Writing, with essays marked against the four criteria, then the retake booked inside the window.
Sending results
Act the same day the result appears. Request delivery through the booking portal or your test centre. IELTS states that postal delivery to up to five organisations is free, with a fee for any more, and electronic delivery is unlimited. IELTS Online results can only be shared electronically. Check each organisation's preferred method first, because a photocopy you post yourself is not the same as official delivery.
Validity
IELTS recommends that organisations accept results for two years after the test date. That is a recommendation. Each organisation sets its own rule, and some immigration authorities and regulators link the limit to the date of your application.
Four dates for your calendar
- The day the result arrives.
- The last day of your retake window.
- The date the result reaches two years.
- Each organisation's earliest deadline.
If more than one skill is short
A full retake is usually right. Do not book the new date first. Rebuild your plan around the skills that fell short, and book only when two full practice tests in a row meet your target.
Write the last retake date on your calendar first, and make every other decision after it.
