You passed Cloud Practitioner. Here is how to use it and keep it
AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner is valid for three years. You can renew by completing AWS Cloud Quest: Recertify Cloud Practitioner in the final six months. You can also pass the latest Cloud Practitioner exam, or any Associate-level or Professional-level AWS exam. The new three-year period runs from the date you complete the renewal step.
Use the first fortnight after you pass well, and do not lose track of the expiry date. Holders who forget it find out when a recruiter cannot verify the badge, although a no-exam renewal route had been open for six months.
What should you do in the 14 days after you pass?
Recruiters see many applicants with the same foundational credential. They choose the ones who show what they have done with it, so treat the first fortnight as part of the exam.
- Days 1 to 3: update your CV, LinkedIn profile and email signature. Add your Credly badge, the digital badge AWS issues so employers can verify the credential.
- Week 1: tell your manager and ask for one cloud-related task, such as reviewing last month's spending in AWS Cost Explorer.
- By day 14: apply to the roles you shortlisted. Search with AWS as a filter, and include support, sales, partner and cost roles alongside technical ones.
On the day you pass, also note your expiry date. It costs nothing now and can save you a full exam later. First, though, the line on your CV has to be right.
How should you write the credential?
A recruiter may check your CV line against your badge, so copy these exactly.
| Where | What to write |
|---|---|
| CV certifications section | AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02), Amazon Web Services, [Year] |
| CV before you pass | AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner candidate, exam booked for [Month Year] |
| LinkedIn headline | [Role] · AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner · [Focus area] |
| LinkedIn proof | Credly badge in the Licences and certifications section |
Keep the exam code. It tells a reader you sat the current exam, which replaced CLF-C01 in September 2023. A correct line opens the door, but proof of use is what carries you through it.
Which two small projects back the credential up?
The credential shows broad understanding of the AWS Cloud. It does not show that you can build or troubleshoot systems, and interviewers for technical roles test that separately. Two short projects from your practice account close part of the gap.
- For technical roles: host a simple static website on Amazon S3, AWS's object storage. Then document how you secured it and what it costs.
- For business roles: estimate a small company's AWS costs in the AWS Pricing Calculator and compare two pricing options, such as On-Demand and a Savings Plan.
Write each project in four lines: the goal, what you did, the result and what you learned. Then turn it into an interview story of situation, action and result.
Expect questions that test understanding rather than definitions. How would you explain the shared responsibility model to a client? Which pricing option suits a steady workload? How would you keep a new AWS account safe? The budget alert you set on day one answers the last one better than any definition.
Projects keep the knowledge in use. That matters, because the clock on the credential starts on the day you pass.
How long is it valid, and how do you renew?
AWS certifications are valid for three years. When you renew, the new three-year period runs from the date you complete the renewal step. AWS lists four routes for Cloud Practitioner.
| Route | What it involves |
|---|---|
| AWS Cloud Quest: Recertify Cloud Practitioner | A game-based course with no exam, open when your credential is due to expire within six months |
| The latest Cloud Practitioner exam | A full sitting of the current version |
| Any Associate-level AWS exam | Renews Cloud Practitioner as well as earning the new credential |
| Any Professional-level AWS exam | The same effect, at a higher level |
Cloud Quest is the lightest route for most holders, because it needs no exam. Before you rely on it, confirm on the AWS recertification page that it is still offered, and check its cost when your window opens.
The Associate route suits anyone already heading that way. A holder who passes Solutions Architect Associate in year two has renewed Cloud Practitioner too, with no separate step to plan.
What happens if the cycle ends, and how do you prevent it?
If your three years end without renewal, the credential expires. You would need to pass the current exam again. Your badge stops verifying, so employers may treat the credential as missing.
A calendar set on the day you pass prevents that.
| When | Action |
|---|---|
| The day you pass | Note the expiry date and set the three reminders below |
| 12 months before | Choose your route: Cloud Quest, the latest exam, or an Associate or Professional exam |
| 6 months before | The Cloud Quest window opens; check that it is still offered and what it costs |
| 3 months before | Final reminder: finish the route you chose |
If an Associate credential sits in your plans within the three years, time it to land before expiry. That leaves only one question: which credential to take next.
Which credential should come next?
Choose from your goal, not from the most famous name. Some holders start the hardest Associate exam because it is famous, then stall. Spend the 50 per cent voucher you receive after a pass on the exam your goal needs.
| Your goal | Sensible next step |
|---|---|
| Designing solutions on AWS | AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate |
| Building applications | AWS Certified Developer – Associate |
| Running and operating systems | AWS Certified CloudOps Engineer – Associate |
| AI and machine learning work | AWS Certified AI Practitioner, then a machine learning credential |
| Cloud security | CompTIA Security+, then an AWS security credential |
| Business, sales or finance roles | Experience and cost management practice first |
CloudOps Engineer replaced SysOps Administrator in September 2025, so older advice may use the old name.
Stop collecting when the next credential would not change an employer's decision. In technical roles, one Associate credential plus a year of hands-on work outweighs several foundational ones. In business roles, experience with real cloud bills often adds more than another exam.
If you are still weighing the bigger picture, Is AWS Cloud Practitioner worth it for you? compares it with AI Practitioner and the Associate level. Facts here were checked against AWS's documents in October 2026. Chapter 15 of the book builds your renewal plan, and Appendix D includes a ready message asking AWS to confirm your renewal route.
- Add your expiry date to your calendar with reminders at 12, 6 and 3 months before it.
- Write the credential on your CV as AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02), Amazon Web Services, with the year.
- Add your Credly badge to the Licences and certifications section of LinkedIn.
- Write your first project in four lines: goal, what you did, result and lesson.
