AWS Cloud Practitioner exam cost and booking: the real budget, the ID count and the 15 minutes that cost a fee

By Mustafa K. Al-Dori · Checked against official documents on 9 October 2026 · 5 min read

The short answer

AWS publishes the Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) fee as US$100 per attempt, plus any tax; check the local price when you book. Budget for training, practice questions and a possible full-price retake after a 14-day wait. Bring two IDs to a test centre or one primary ID online, and never join an online exam more than 15 minutes late.

Two losses catch Cloud Practitioner candidates after the studying is done. The first is a budget built on the exam fee alone, when a subscription, a practice resource and a second attempt arrive later and double it. The second is a fee lost on the day, to one missing ID or an online check-in started too late.

This page sets out the fee, the full budget and the rules for booking, retakes, identity and timing as AWS's policies state them. They were checked against AWS's documents in October 2026.

How much does the AWS Cloud Practitioner exam cost?

AWS publishes the fee: US$100 for each attempt at a foundational exam, which includes Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02). Tax may be added. The price in your local currency depends on exchange rates.

AWS reviews exam prices at least once a year, so treat US$100 as the published figure, not a fixed one. Check the price, tax and currency shown in your AWS Certification Account before you pay. That account is where you book exams, see results and manage renewal.

Two words in that fee matter more than the number. "Each attempt" means a failed exam is paid again in full. That is why the fee is only one line of the budget.

What does the full budget look like?

There are six cost categories. Many candidates plan for the first and meet the rest later.

Category When it arises How to keep it down
Exam fee, plus any tax When you book Ask your employer to pay
Course or Skill Builder subscription Before you study Start with free official training
One practice-question source During study One source, used thoroughly
Practice account During study Free plan, set up safely
Retake, paid in full After a failed attempt Book only when ready
Travel, or webcam and room set-up Exam day Depends on centre or online

The three budgets differ in training, not in the exam fee. The economy budget uses free official training, the free official question set and a free-plan practice account. The standard budget adds one paid course, or a subscription month with the official practice exam. The intensive budget adds an instructor-led course.

In every budget, keep a reserve for a second attempt. Then cut where it does not risk the pass. An employer that is an AWS partner, or runs on AWS, has a clear reason to pay. Use the free official training before you buy anything.

The other big saving comes after the exam. After you pass any AWS exam, you receive a 50 per cent discount voucher for your next one. Read its terms, including the expiry date, because AWS cannot extend it.

Money is the easier risk to manage. Identity is the one that ends exam day before it starts.

What are AWS's ID and language rules?

AWS's policies set different ID rules for the two ways of testing.

  • At a test centre: two IDs, either two primary IDs or one primary and one secondary ID.
  • Online: one primary ID.

A primary ID must be original, unexpired and issued by a government. Photocopies and digital IDs are not accepted. Your name must match the name on your AWS Certification Account. If it does not, fix it early: AWS allows name changes up to two business days before your first exam.

If English is not your first language and you sit the exam in English, you can request a 30-minute extension. You request it once, before you register, and it then applies to your future AWS exams. Candidates with a documented disability can request accommodations before scheduling each exam.

How do booking, rescheduling and retakes work?

Book in five steps, in this order:

  1. Sign in to your AWS Certification Account, with your name exactly as on your IDs.
  2. Request the 30-minute extension or any accommodation first, if you need one.
  3. Choose AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, CLF-C02, and your language.
  4. Choose a Pearson VUE test centre or online proctoring, then a date that fits the end of your plan.
  5. Pay, or apply a voucher, then save the confirmation and set reminders.

Pearson VUE is the company that delivers AWS exams. Online proctoring means a remote invigilator watches you through your webcam.

You can reschedule or cancel up to 24 hours before your appointment. Each appointment can be rescheduled only twice. Cancel within 24 hours, or miss the appointment, and you lose the fee. Documented illness or emergencies may qualify for a waiver.

If you fail, you must wait 14 calendar days before you can retake the exam. There is no limit on attempts, but you pay the full fee each time. Once you pass, you cannot sit the same exam again for two years.

What happens on exam day?

At a test centre, bring your two original IDs and arrive early. Centres check your identity and photograph you before the exam. Everything else goes in the locker you are given.

Online, the clock is the risk. You can start check-in up to 30 minutes before your appointment. If you are more than 15 minutes late, or your computer fails the system test, the exam cannot be launched and the fee is lost.

So start check-in as soon as it opens. Run the system test days before, on the same computer and network, and close every other application on the day. You need a private room, a clear desk, a webcam and a stable connection. You may not stand up or leave the camera's view for any reason.

Most AWS exams do not show a result on screen. Your result is posted to your AWS Certification Account within five business days. You can then download a score report showing your performance by domain, and AWS issues a digital badge through Credly.

What to do next

Put your IDs next to your AWS Certification Account today and check that the names match exactly. If English is not your first language, request the extension before you register. Then fill in your three budget levels with local prices, including the retake reserve.

Chapter 9 of the book lists every cost, and the budget template in Appendix C sets out all three levels for your own prices. Appendix D holds message templates for voucher, name, result and extension problems, and Appendix E is the exam-day checklist. To choose a date your budget can trust, read How to build your Cloud Practitioner study plan, and plan ahead for renewal.

Your next step
  1. Put your IDs next to your AWS Certification Account and check that your name matches exactly.
  2. If English is not your first language, request the 30-minute extension before you register.
  3. Fill in your three budget levels with local prices, including a reserve for a full-price retake.
  4. If you plan to test online, run the Pearson VUE system test on the computer and network you will use.

Questions readers ask

Can I sit the exam if I am under 18?
Yes, from the age of 13. Candidates aged 13 to 17 may sit AWS Certification exams with the consent of a parent or legal guardian. Arrange that consent early. Check the ID rules for younger candidates in the AWS Certification policies before you book.
Is AWS Certified AI Practitioner cheaper than Cloud Practitioner?
No. Both AWS foundational exams have the same published fee, so price should not decide between them. Choose on what you need to understand: a broad base in services, security, pricing and support, or AI and machine learning work on AWS.
Which languages can I sit the exam in?
The exam is offered in 12 languages, including Arabic, English, French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish and Chinese. Italian and German retire after 31 December 2026, so choose the language you will study in now. If English is not your first language and you sit in English, you can request the 30-minute extension.
Who do I contact about a voucher or a booking problem?
AWS Training and Certification handles your account, vouchers, accommodations, results, badges and renewal. Pearson VUE handles the appointment: the test centre, online check-in and technical problems during the exam. AWS Support plans cover cloud accounts, not certification, so do not write to them.
What if my online exam freezes halfway through?
Contact the proctor at the time. Once the session has ended, photograph the screen if you can. Write to Pearson VUE the same day with your appointment number and evidence, and copy AWS Training and Certification. In the book's example the candidate received a new appointment at no charge; treat that as an example, not a rule.
