What the PMP really costs: eight categories, three budgets and the fees nobody warns you about
The PMP costs far more than the exam fee. Budget for eight categories: optional membership, the exam fee, 35 hours of training, study materials and one question bank, rescheduling fees, retake fees, travel or online set-up, and renewal. The exam fee depends on membership and region, and PMI shows yours in your candidate account once your application is approved.
Most candidates budget for the exam fee and nothing else. Then the course arrives, then a question bank, then a rescheduling fee, and sometimes a retake. The true cost ends up double the plan, and most of the overspend was avoidable.
This page lists every cost on the way to the PMP, shows three realistic budgets and explains the dates that turn a free change into a lost fee. The rules were checked against PMI's documents on 9 October 2026.
Why is there no single PMP exam fee on this page?
Because there is no single fee that would be true for you. The exam fee is set by membership and region. PMI shows the fee that applies to you in your candidate account once your application is approved.
Membership adds a second variable. Member rates apply only if you joined before paying the exam fee. Join a day late and you pay the non-member price for a membership you now also hold.
Any figure printed here would be right for some readers and wrong for others, and it could change after publication. So the honest answer is a method:
- Open the PMP page on pmi.org on the day you decide.
- Note the member and non-member prices, and the membership price.
- Confirm the fee shown in your candidate account before you pay.
- Read the refund and retake rules in the PMI Certification Handbook.
Beyond the membership choice, the exam fee is the cost you control least. The rest is where the real decisions sit.
What are all the costs of the PMP?
There are eight categories. Most first budgets cover only one of them: the exam fee.
| Category | When it arises | Can you avoid it? |
|---|---|---|
| PMI membership | Before you pay the exam fee | Yes, it is optional |
| Exam fee | After approval, or after a passed audit | No |
| 35-hour training | Before you apply | Yes, with an active CAPM |
| Study materials and question bank | During study | Partly: one route, one bank |
| Rescheduling fee | If you change inside 30 days | Yes, by booking early |
| Retake fee | Second or third attempt | Partly, by booking only when ready |
| Travel or online set-up | Exam day | Depends on delivery mode |
| Renewal fee | Every three years | No, if you want to keep it |
Training is where a cheap choice can cost you twice. From 1 December 2026, live instructor-led training counts towards the 35 hours only from three kinds of provider. These are a PMI Authorized Training Partner, a China Registered Education Provider or an eligible accredited higher education programme.
Seeing the categories is one thing. Choosing how much to spend on each is where the three budgets come in.
Which of the three budgets fits you?
The three budgets differ in training and practice, not in the exam fee.
| Item | Economy | Standard | Intensive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exam fee | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Membership | Optional | Yes | Yes |
| Course | Self-paced | Instructor-led, approved | Instructor-led, approved |
| One question bank | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Extra mocks or coaching | No | Some | Yes |
| Retake reserve | Partial | Full | Full |
The economy budget suits the disciplined self-learner with limited time. The standard budget suits someone who learns best with deadlines and discussion. The intensive budget adds extra mocks or coaching for a candidate who needs a short, structured run.
In every budget, keep a reserve for one retake. It is not pessimism. A reserve you never spend costs nothing, while a retake you did not plan for can stall you for months.
What does it cost to move or retake the exam?
This is where budgets break, so the rules matter. The handbook sets three windows around your appointment.
| When you change | What happens |
|---|---|
| More than 30 days before | Reschedule or cancel online at no charge |
| Within 30 days | A fee of US$70 plus taxes applies |
| Inside 48 hours | You cannot reschedule; a no-show loses the whole exam fee |
If something serious happens, contact PMI within 72 hours of the missed appointment, with evidence.
Your eligibility period lasts one year from approval, or from the day you pass an audit. You may sit the exam up to three times within it, and each further attempt carries a retake fee. After three unsuccessful attempts, you must wait one year from your last exam before applying again.
Timing is the whole game. Mona booked her exam 45 days ahead. At day 35 her mocks fell short, so she moved the date online at no cost. She passed three weeks later. Had she waited until day 20, the same change would have cost US$70 plus taxes.
How do you cut the cost without cutting your chances?
Four moves save the most money:
- Ask your employer to sponsor the course or the exam, and offer to share what you learn with your team.
- Compare membership with the discount on the same day, before you reach the payment page.
- Use one question bank thoroughly rather than three superficially.
- Book more than 30 days ahead, so any change is free.
Faisal used the first move. His employer paid for the course in exchange for a lunch-and-learn session after he passed. He paid the exam fee himself, kept a retake reserve and used none of it.
The cheapest exam is the one you sit once, on a date your plan supports. PMP study hours and plan shows how to set that date from your real week.
What should you check before exam day?
Exam day has its own small costs. At a test centre, it is travel and time. Online, it is a private room, a stable connection and a system test before you schedule. PMI recommends the test centre. Its handbook states that online proctoring is not available to citizens of mainland China, Macau or Hong Kong, wherever they live.
Bring an original, valid government-issued ID with a photo and a signature. The name must match your appointment exactly. If you test online, start check-in 30 minutes early, because late arrivals are not admitted.
PMI posts your official result no later than 10 business days after the exam. Then renewal begins: 60 PDUs and a fee every three years, covered in PMP renewal and PDUs.
What to do next
Open pmi.org today and note the exam fee, the member rate and the membership price, with the date. Choose your budget level, price each category and add a retake reserve. Then ask your employer about sponsorship before you spend anything.
To make this concrete, Chapter 9 of the book walks through every category. The budget template in Appendix C lays out all three levels side by side for your own prices. If a payment goes missing, Appendix D has a ready message to PMI.
- Check the current exam fee and membership price on pmi.org on the day you decide
- Choose an economy, standard or intensive budget and price each category
- Ask your employer to sponsor the course or the exam before you pay for either
- Book your exam more than 30 days ahead and set a reminder 31 days before it
